Visual Development & Character Design
Mexica Deities
A vibrant series of digital art pieces that bring to life various Mexica gods while delving into Mexico's rich religious syncretism and mythology, set against iconic locations around central Mexico. This project beautifully exemplifies Mariana's passion for visual storytelling with cultural depth, inviting viewers to explore the intersection of history, spirituality, and art.

Pesadilla
After a Women's Day protest, a young woman falls asleep waiting for her best friend's text and slips into a nightmare where she's stalked through dark streets. The visual world contrasts rough, muralism-inspired textures for reality against surreal dreamscapes blending engraving aesthetics with grotesque, vivid characters. The design for our protagonists, Valeria and Paloma show their complementary personalities and their shared values as women and friends.
Abroad
What does a school for mythological creatures look like underwater? For Abroad, two key locations were developed for the International School of Mermaids: a library where ancient oceanic and land knowledge meets curiosity, and a hallway alive with the textures, colors, and symbols of the seas. Every detail was designed to make young audiences feel that this world is both fantastical and warmly familiar.
The heart of Abroad is its characters: mythological sea creatures from Finland, Mexico, and Japan, each carrying the visual language of their culture in their design. As exchange students navigating an unfamiliar school and a mystery, they needed to feel distinct and vivid. Character design balanced cultural authenticity with the warmth and expressiveness a young audience needs to follow, trust, and root for them.
